The Analysis
Earth Chicory is a deep, saturated brown that absorbs a significant amount of light due to its low LRV of 8.23. Because it reflects very little light, it will make a room feel physically smaller and more intimate, effectively pulling the walls in to create a cozy, enclosed atmosphere.
This shade is best used as a bold accent or a deliberate, moody statement. Avoid painting an entire room this dark unless you are intentionally aiming for a sophisticated, cocoon-like effect in a library or media room.
LRV 8History & Origin
This is a nod to traditional, high-end Heritage design. It mimics the deep, wood-toned pigments popular in library and study spaces from the early 20th century.
How to Use It
Use this in smaller rooms like dens or powder rooms, or on cabinetry for high impact. Pair it with warm brass hardware to pull out the golden undertones, or use light oak wood tones to prevent the space from feeling too heavy.
The Mood
Living with this colour feels grounding and remarkably restful. It lacks the jittery energy of brighter tones, offering a stable, quiet backdrop that helps the mind settle at the end of the day.
Colour harmonies
Complementary
Opposite on the colour wheel — bold, high-contrast pairings. Use for a feature wall or furniture you want to command attention.
Analogous
Neighbouring hues — cohesive and calm, great for layered schemes that feel collected rather than matched.
Split complementary
Near-opposites for strong contrast with a little less tension than a pure complement. A favourite of interior designers.
Triadic
Three evenly spaced hues — balanced, vibrant, and versatile. Keep one dominant and use the others sparingly.
Tetradic (square)
Four hues in a square on the wheel — rich, dynamic palettes. Best when one colour leads and the others accent.
Monochromatic
Dark, mid, and light steps on the same hue — a failsafe gradient for trim, walls, and accents without shifting colour family.
