The Analysis
Folklore is a deep, moody brown with strong mauve undertones. Because it has a very low Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 6.68, it absorbs almost all light, which will make a room feel smaller and more enclosed rather than bright or airy.
This shade works best as a dramatic, moody accent wall or a full-room wrap in a library or media room. It is too dark for a whole-house main wall color and acts better as a focal point or a cozy 'den' effect.
LRV 7History & Origin
This color channels a modern take on 1970s earth tones rather than a specific period style. It feels contemporary and intentional, avoiding the dated look of traditional browns by leaning into that subtle, dusty purple hue.
How to Use It
Pair this with warm, light oak wood tones or matte black metal hardware to maintain a high-contrast, modern look. Use it in rooms where you want a 'cave-like' atmosphere, such as a home office, a powder room, or a bedroom.
The Mood
This is a grounding, weightier color that creates a sense of seclusion and restfulness. It lacks the stimulation of bright colors, making it ideal for spaces where you want to wind down rather than stay alert.
Colour harmonies
Complementary
Opposite on the colour wheel — bold, high-contrast pairings. Use for a feature wall or furniture you want to command attention.
Analogous
Neighbouring hues — cohesive and calm, great for layered schemes that feel collected rather than matched.
Split complementary
Near-opposites for strong contrast with a little less tension than a pure complement. A favourite of interior designers.
Triadic
Three evenly spaced hues — balanced, vibrant, and versatile. Keep one dominant and use the others sparingly.
Tetradic (square)
Four hues in a square on the wheel — rich, dynamic palettes. Best when one colour leads and the others accent.
Monochromatic
Dark, mid, and light steps on the same hue — a failsafe gradient for trim, walls, and accents without shifting colour family.
