Topsoil

Benjamin Moore · CC-692

The Analysis

Topsoil is a deeply saturated, dark olive-grey that absorbs most light rather than reflecting it. Because of its low LRV of 6.14, it will make a room feel smaller and more intimate, effectively blurring the corners of a space to create a 'cocoon' effect.

This is best used as a high-impact accent color or to define a specific zone, such as a study or media room. It is too heavy for a whole-house palette but works exceptionally well as a backdrop for high-contrast art or cabinetry.

LRV 6

History & Origin

This shade leans into a modern, sophisticated interpretation of mid-century earth tones. It feels current and intentional rather than vintage, providing a tailored, masculine edge to a room.

How to Use It

Pair Topsoil with warm wood tones like walnut to soften the coolness of the grey undertones. For hardware, use matte black for a seamless look or brushed brass to create a sharp, luxury-focused contrast.

The Mood

Living with this colour feels grounding and remarkably restful. It is an ideal choice for rooms where you want to signal to your brain that it is time to slow down, disconnect, and relax.

Colour harmonies

Complementary

Opposite on the colour wheel — bold, high-contrast pairings. Use for a feature wall or furniture you want to command attention.

Analogous

Neighbouring hues — cohesive and calm, great for layered schemes that feel collected rather than matched.

Split complementary

Near-opposites for strong contrast with a little less tension than a pure complement. A favourite of interior designers.

Triadic

Three evenly spaced hues — balanced, vibrant, and versatile. Keep one dominant and use the others sparingly.

Tetradic (square)

Four hues in a square on the wheel — rich, dynamic palettes. Best when one colour leads and the others accent.

Monochromatic

Dark, mid, and light steps on the same hue — a failsafe gradient for trim, walls, and accents without shifting colour family.
