COFFEE

The Analysis

Coffee is a deep, saturated brown that absorbs most light, making a room feel intimate and contained rather than spacious. Because it has a very low LRV of 6.06, it will significantly darken any wall it covers and make the boundaries of the room feel closer.

This is best used as a bold accent wall or to create a high-contrast 'jewel box' effect in small spaces like powder rooms or dens. It is too heavy for use as a primary wall colour in small, low-light rooms unless you intentionally want a cave-like aesthetic.

LRV 6

History & Origin

It draws on classic library and study aesthetics, often associated with mid-century masculine design or traditional wood-paneled heritage interiors. It feels timeless rather than trendy, leaning into a curated, permanent look.

How to Use It

Pair this with warm, honey-toned woods like oak or teak to bridge the dark tone with natural textures. Brushed brass hardware provides a sophisticated contrast, while matte black fixtures will disappear into the deep brown for a seamless look.

The Mood

Living with this colour creates a grounded, restful atmosphere that feels solid and stable. It lacks the starkness of black, providing a softer, more organic feeling that is excellent for relaxation.

Colour harmonies

Complementary

Opposite on the colour wheel — bold, high-contrast pairings. Use for a feature wall or furniture you want to command attention.

Analogous

Neighbouring hues — cohesive and calm, great for layered schemes that feel collected rather than matched.

Split complementary

Near-opposites for strong contrast with a little less tension than a pure complement. A favourite of interior designers.

Triadic

Three evenly spaced hues — balanced, vibrant, and versatile. Keep one dominant and use the others sparingly.

Tetradic (square)

Four hues in a square on the wheel — rich, dynamic palettes. Best when one colour leads and the others accent.

Monochromatic

Dark, mid, and light steps on the same hue — a failsafe gradient for trim, walls, and accents without shifting colour family.
